Dialogues between Modernism & Laundry

2019

Does a building adapt to its inhabitants or do its inhabitants adapt to its architecture? A building is shaped by a ‘one-on-one’ relation with the surroundings and spatial conditions where it emerged.

When an architect’s considerations or the budget for the construction did not meet all the expectations of the inhabitants, the residents are free to develop adaptive solutions to satisfy mundane needs.

Shoot between Santiago and Valparaiso, Chile, the video documents laundry practices in three emblematic modernist buildings of Chile.  Following the traces of modernity, the video reveals routinary gestures and the subjects – women-  working on domestic tasks.
